Country Boy Serving The Lord
To all Christians part 51

Today i want to  teach about Luke 5:36-39. This is a hard one for me for i want to go in a different direction than it is pointing to but at same time believe we can learn from these verses. It is talking here concerning the old and corrupt ways of the Pharisees and the ways in which Christ has called us to live. This goes directly back to the prior verses in Luke teaching on Fasting the we are not called to be as the Pharisees are.

This scripture gives us 3 illustrations that are very interesting to see. 1) A piece of new garment upon an old. They way this is described is once you have taken from the new you have ripped the new garment ruining it as well as allowing for the old to be torn again for it is worn.

       2) Putting new wine into old bottles. This is something new to me that i never knew until today. The process of putting the new wine into old wineskin’s or bottles is that the new wine is still fermenting and will end up bursting the old skins. Resulting in both the loss of the wine and the wineskin or bottle.

     3) After drinking old wine no one wants new. They would always say that the old was better no matter what.

Conclusion of these three things bring me that of which William Hendriksen stated “Not that Jesus offered something that was entirely new, in the sense that it amounted to rebellion against the very essence of Old Testament teaching: Love God above all….trust in him completely, exercise justice, mercy, and faithfulness. No, indeed! In that respect the teaching of Jesus was old in the best sense of the term.” Basically this we need to look toward Jesus for the way in which we live our lives. He has called us to follow Him and i see fit no other way that to read the word of God and look at his life as a model to us all as Christians.

What i was wanting to go with this scripture was simple this: When we as Christians have accepted Christ as our Lord and Savior then we too want to put away the old. We can’t service with the old in us. We can’t straddle the line between the world and God. So here’s a salvation check. If your living within the old ways then you were never saved at all. I understand there are times that we trip up but a trip up is different than staying down and not getting up. The bible teaches us that once God has started a good work within you he will carry it on to the end. But like i said you have to of truly accepted him first and had the blood of Christ wash away your sins. You can be in the church or even call yourself a Christian this does not make you one. The actions within your life will be acknowledgment that you have surrendered to Christ and he has taken the old and given you the new.

May God truly bless you today.
